PBL Project "What Makes a Bird a Bird?"
As many of you have heard, we are learning all about birds! Grade One has launched a PBL (Project Based Learning) Project entitled "What Makes a Bird a Bird?" For four weeks, we will be ALL IN to this project. Our class is excited to invite you in to show you what we know! The date of our presentation will be announced soon!
The following link gives a great explanation of why we are walking down the path of project based learning. I'm so excited to have been given the opportunity to teach this way and I truly believe that when done well, it maximizes student engagement and learning!

What is PBL?
We are profiling six specific types of Southern Alberta birds in our project. While all students are learning all about birds, each student is becoming an EXPERT in one of the six birds. We are Junior Ornithologists and are having a blast.
If you or anyone you know has any artifacts etc., that you think we might be interested in seeing while we take this journey about birds, please let me know! We love looking at photos, nests, eggs, stuffed birds... basically ANYTHING related to birds!
Here are the six birds we are becoming experts in! Ask your child about their bird. I think you'll be VERY impressed with what they know after only two weeks!
American White Pelican
Black Capped Chickadee
Great Horned Owl
Long Billed Curlew
Thanks so much to all the parents that have emailed me about driving for our Lowe's field trip. I wrote down the names of every parent that got back to me, so if I happened to miss emailing you back, no worries, you are on the list to come! Just a heads up, many parents will only have two students to drive back and forth. Normally I would cancel drivers when we have so many, but Lowe's has requested a 3:1 adult to student ratio for the building portion so I still will be able to use you all!
The trip is next Wednesday from 12:30pm-1:30pm. I would like to leave the school by 12:15pm, so if all drivers could meet us at our classroom by 12:10pm that would be great. I am going to have the students eat lunch BEFORE going outside on that day, so we can spend the 10 minutes after lunch talking about behaviour expectations prior to leaving.
IF YOU HAVE NOT RETURNED YOUR CHILD'S YELLOW WAIVER FORM FOR THE FIELD TRIP THIS MAY AFFECT THEIR PARTICIPATION IN THE BUILDING PORTION OF THE TRIP. SECOND FORMS WERE SENT HOME TODAY, PLEASE RETURN THEM ASAP.
Goodbye to Miss Petkau
Wow. I can't even begin to say how much I'm going to miss this talented young lady. She has done SO much for my students and has grown SO much over the past four months. Tomorrow we will be having a little party for her and will spend some time enjoying her before we say goodbye on Tuesday. We will be presenting her with a class gift on Tuesday, but I've told students that if they want to make Miss Petkau a small gift over the weekend to say thank you, they can bring that in on Tuesday as well.
Morning Drop Off
Now that the weather is getting so nice, please feel free to drop your child off at school a tad early to play on the playground before school. There is supervision outside after 8:00am and that little bit of play time before school can do so much for waking up our brains and settling our bodies to learn. If your child is being dropped off ANY time between 8:00-8:15am, please direct them to the playground to play.
Grade Two Placement
I've had some questions regarding classroom placements for Grade Two. Please use the MMH website and fill out the Student Profile Form if you'd like staff to have information regarding placement for your child. The due date for forms is May 16.
If you haven't already, please follow the link to our April MMH Newsletter.
2016 2017 School Year
Please fill out and return your child's registration forms that were sent home next week. It's very important that we know if your family will NOT be returning to MMH next year. If this is the case please let me know ASAP.
