Just a couple of things to note for this week:

The Homemade Secret Christmas Card Exchange project is coming home in your child's backpack today.

The deadline for gifts/donations for Project Chethan's Friends has been extended to Monday, December 14.

If you ordered MMH apparel (clothing), it will be given to your child starting Wednesday, Dec. 9.  If you noted that your order was a Xmas gift, you will be called to pick up your order at the office when it is ready.

Christmas Concert Information for Thursday (Gr. 1, Gr. 3, Gr. 5, and Mrs. VanRoon’s class):

Dropping off your child at College Drive Community Church (drop off starts at 6:00pm; doors to the sanctuary open at 6:00pm; concert starts at 6:30pm):
Please drop your students off in the Multi-level classrooms in the church. You can access this entrance to the Multi-level classrooms by following these directions: When you first enter the church through the main entrance turn immediately to the right and walk towards the washrooms. The entrance to the Multi-level classrooms will be right in front of you as you approach the washrooms. Grade 3 and Grade 5 students will need to be dropped off at the entrance to the Multi-level classrooms (the right of the washrooms). Mrs. VanRoon’s students will go to the classrooms to the left of the washrooms and find the “Fireside Room”. Grade 1 students will go to the right or left of the washrooms as we have them split in two different (but close) locations – please find your child’s Grade 1 teacher to know which room to go into.

Picking up your child after the concert:
If you have a child in class Grade 1 or 5, your child will be waiting for you on the stage in the sanctuary.
If you have a child in Grade 3 or Mrs. VanRoon’s class, your child will be waiting for you in the foyer.

Thanks so much, if there are any questions please don't hesitate to ask.

How Many Sleeps??

Hi There!

DECEMBER NEWSLETTER
I can't believe we are in the home stretch to Christmas!  Please take a few moments to read the school newsletter if you haven't already.  It includes very important information about the Christmas Concert and gives important dates for this month.  Thanks so much!

Click here to see the newsletter.

CHRISTMAS CONCERT
IMPORTANT:  If your family is NOT going to be attending the Christmas concert, please make a note in your child's agenda and return your tickets as soon as possible.  These tickets will then be redistributed to families with more than two parents who are wishing to attend.  Thanks so much!

CHETHAN'S FRIENDS CHRISTMAS DONATIONS
Please see the previous blog posts for details about the charity project our class is participating in for Christmas.  Just a friendly reminder that if you plan to participate, we would love to have items ready to go by December 12.  They can be dropped off at any time.  Thanks again!

CHRISTMAS CARD EXCHANGE
Your child is bringing home an extra special HOMEWORK project in their agenda later this week.  As a way to encourage the spirit of giving, we are having a SECRET Home Made Card Exchange!  It is a personal, inexpensive way for the children to experience the season together.  Be creative, use any materials you like!  Some ideas are: stickers, stamps, felts, paint, crayons, wrapping paper, construction, cardboard, old cards, fabric, beads, magazine pictures, glitter…  Your child is bringing home a brown envelope that the card MUST be returned in.  This makes sure everyone gets a card that is approx. the same size.  The children may decorate the envelope if they wish.  Please do NOT seal the envelope.

We have drawn names to see who makes cards for whom.  The name of the student you will be making a card for is on a small piece of paper in the envelope.  Please stress to your child that this is a SECRET until the day of our card exchange.

Cards MUST BE RETURNED TO SCHOOL by Monday, December 14, and will be exchanged on the second last day of school. Thanks so much in advance for participating!!

PSST... If you're looking for little gifts for Christmas, many students are running low on working markers and/or pencil crayons.  Just an idea for you, I know I'm always up for a great idea!

EXCITING NEWS!
I'm thrilled to announce that we have an intern teacher joining our classroom in January!  She is a PSIII student from the University of Lethbridge.  PSIII is the last practicum required of a student before completing their degree in education.  I am so excited for the opportunity to enhance the teaching in my classroom for your children by adding another qualified adult to the mix!  For more information about the role of a UofL student in the classroom, please CLICK HERE.

CHRISTMAS PARTY
Our Christmas party will take place in the afternoon on Thursday, December 17.  If you are signed up to bring a snack you will receive an email shortly.  Thanks so much!

OUTDOOR WEAR
I can't believe to tell you how grateful I am to everyone for remembering to send warm winter clothing with your child each day.  They have a BLAST outside when they are dressed for the weather, and I'm pleased to announce that we have decreased our "get ready" time from 13minutes (phew...) to only 7minutes!

INTRODUCING... PROJECT CHETHAN'S FRIENDS!!

Dear Families of Mrs. Fallwell’s Class:

As teachers, we are always so very grateful to receive such wonderful gifts and cards at Christmas time.  This year, Mrs. Fleming and I would like to present another option for you during this special time of year.  Not only will it bring joy to some very special children in need, it will no doubt help to reinforce to your own children, the “True Meaning of Christmas”.

The Alberta Children’s Hospital is a most amazing place that is very near and dear to my heart, as my oldest daughter Lucy spent a length of time there as a newborn and will have heart surgery there in the future.  When I read of the following project a few days ago, I immediately wanted to be a part of it.  In lieu of a teacher gift this year, please consider PROJECT CHETHAN’S FRIENDS!

PROJECT CHETHAN'S FRIENDS
As you no doubt know, Chethan is a very special friend and member of our class.  He brings a hug and a smile to each one of his friends and teachers each day.  As you may or may not know, he is nothing less than a medical miracle.   During Chethan’s many, many stays at both the Alberta Children’s Hospital and LRH, he received exceptional care.
Since that time, his family has been donating money to ACH at Christmas time every year. This year, they will have the opportunity to be in Calgary right before Christmas and feel it is a perfect time to play 'Santa'!
It is hard enough for a child to be in hospital for extended periods of time and for parent(s) to witness their child's suffering. It is even harder during Christmas time.
Chethan’s family’s intent is to donate gifts/items for the children and adults in UNIT 3 and the INTENSIVE CARE UNIT of ACH this year. These families would be in similar situation as they were, in acute crisis situations where there is no time to prepare and little opportunity to access basic necessities.

You can participate in the form of a monetary donation, or even better, a small care package for parents or gift item for a child.  Even if you can spare a TOONIE or two, it would go toward a great cause!

For the parents, they would like to make packages of things such as toothbrushes, shampoo, notepads and pens, things that might help make their stay easier so they can focus on their ill child.
Any ideas would be appreciated!

Gift ideas for children are usually easy, however, there are restrictions of gifts, so if you would like to donate an item, please see below:

Here is a summarized list of 'gift restrictions' for Alberta Children's Hospital and Chinook Regional Hospital:
- do NOT gift wrap
- toys must be new, not used
- non-breakable and safe (e.g., no sharp edges, made of non-toxic materials)
- easy to disinfect (should have hard surfaces, I.e., plastic, vinyl, painted wood or metal)
- non-aggressive (no toy weapons, no violent action figures or books/comics
Ideas: They accept colouring materials, books, DVDs rated PG, baby toys, kits, puzzles, playing cards, Hot Wheels, play doh, Lego, and board games!

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact Anjana, at anjanasburgess@hotmail.com.
Donations of $ or items can be sent directly to me at the school or can be given to Chethan’s mom, Anjana Sawhney-Burgess prior to December 12.

Thank you so much!

Welcome Back

November 16, 2015

Welcome Back!  I hope everyone had a great break!  We are well in to the swing of things, post report cards and are jumping feet first into a new theme.  BEARS!!  We are going to become bear experts over the next few weeks and are so excited to get started.
A few things to mention:

1.  A sight word review page was sent home today.  Please review these with your child.  At the beginning of December there will be a second "Sight Word Check-in", to see how your child has progressed.

2.  If you weren't able to make it to Parent Teacher Interviews and would still like to see me, please let me know.  I gave away many resources to some parents at the interviews and I wouldn't want anyone to miss out.  Thanks!

3.  Hot lunch forms went home in your child's agenda today.  They are due Friday.

4.  December Scholastic book orders are coming home soon.  If you would like to place an order as a Christmas gift, please CLEARLY state this somewhere on your order form.  When the books arrive I will contact you directly for pick up.

5.  Home Reading:  Thanks for continuing to write the names of the books your child is reading in his/her agenda!

6.  Please be sure to clearly label all mitts, snow pants, hats and boots.  It's such a big help when we have 4 or 5 pairs/items that look alike.  Remember, students will continue to go outside for recess until it is -20 outside.  I give students LOTS of time to get dressed prior to going out, so please send the items they'll need to stay warm.

Thanks so much, and as always, if there are any questions, please feel free to email me at any time.

A Few Things to Mention!

Sight Word Check-In:  Thanks so much for working on the sight words that have been coming home glued in your child's agenda each week!  I like to sit down and check in with your child every few weeks to keep an eye on how they are doing with these.  We just completed our first check in of the year, so keep your eyes open for a slip coming home letting you know how your child is doing!
Note:  Once we have learned a sight word, that word becomes a word that we DONT guess at when spelling in our journals.  Today we introduced our very own dictionaries to keep in our desks.  These will help us spell those sight words correctly!

Home Reading:  Please keep your eyes open for a letter regarding home reading which will be coming home later this week.  You are being asked to choose from a few different options, according to what works best for your family.

IMPORTANT DATES COMING UP:

Oct 13 – 19 – Feed the Bug Food Collection
Please bring in non-perishable food donations to put towards our "Feed the Bug" food collection! All non-perishable food donations go towards the Lethbridge food bank.  We are learning about belonging to a community and this is helping us become responsible and caring citizens!

In honor of Gary Pickering's Retirement, the whole school is dressing up for his goodbye assembly!  Your child is welcome to come in western gear!

Oct 16 - Hot lunch forms are due.

September 20

It's hard to believe we are nearing the end of our first month!  We've been up to SO much!  We are continuing to build routines but are well in the swing of other learning as well!  We are already nearing the end of our first units in Science (colors) and Math (patterns).
Here are a few things you need to know for the upcoming week.

Picture Day is TUESDAY!

* SCIENCE HOMEWORK
On Monday your child will be bringing home a small ziplock bag in his/her agenda.  Please help your child to find and place 4-5 different looking leaves in the bag, then return the bag to school by Wednesday.    We need the leaves for a fall science activity.  Thanks!

TOONIES FOR TERRY
Thank you SO much for encouraging your child to earn Toonies for Terry!  We've heard such great stories of our friends being great citizens and family helpers.  They are SO proud to watch our envelope of money grow!  You can continue to bring toonies in to school all this week.

EXCITING NEWS!!
We are having an assembly Monday morning at 8:30am to help us get revved up for our big walk this coming Friday.  We are SO happy to announce that Terry Fox's uncle, Terry Fox Sr., will be joining us to speak to our students.  Everyone is welcome, so please join us if you can!

Terry Fox Walk
Please let me know if you're planning to join us for our walk on Friday!  Everyone is welcome!

Monday, September 14, 2015

Wow!  What a fun and crazy few weeks we've had!  We've been working hard at learning routines and building our stamina being full day students!  We've jumped head first into our curriculum and are learning about patterns, colours and being readers and writers.  We are reviewing letter sounds and have begun writing in our journals!  Music with Ms.Nevels has been a huge hit, as has being in the gym each day.

PICTURE DAY
Picture Day is September 22.  Please send back the Josten's form that was sent home.  If you need a new one, I do have a few.

INSIDE SHOES
Wow… We're doing pretty great with many of our routines, but if you as parents could help me out on this one issue I'd SO appreciate it!  Please make sure your child knows which shoes stay at school as inside shoes.  With 24 students and 48 pairs of shoes to deal with in our classroom each day, we're sometimes wearing the wrong ones home.  Thanks so much!

TERRY FOX WALK and TOONIES FOR TERRY
Our Terry Fox Walk is Friday, September 25.  If you'd be willing to walk with us please let me know.  I can use all the grown up help I can get.  Siblings, strollers etc. are MORE than welcome!  We will be walking as a group from MMH to Nicholas Sheran lake, around the lake and back to the school.  We will be leaving at 9am and returning by about 10:15am.   Students are asked to wear BLUE and GOLD (yellow) on the day of the walk.
We have begun talking about Terry in our classroom.  Using child friendly dialogue, we are talking about heroes and giving back.  We are asking all students to try and EARN a TOONIE for TERRY.  Students are not to simply ask their parents for money, but the idea is that they earn it, making it more meaningful to them.  Our school wide goal is $3000, which works out to two toonies per child.  We have two weeks, can we do it!?!?  The class that raises the largest dollar amount wins the MMH Spirit Cup!
Thank you for helping keep Terry's dream alive.  More information to come on our upcoming assembly.  It will be fabulous.

AGENDAS
Phew!  We have started writing in our agendas and man, it's hard work!  We are writing very little to start off with, as they take quite some time to complete and we are just learning to copy from the Smartboard.  Hopefully you are able to decipher our information!  Please remember to initial the agenda each night and write any notes you may have for me on the parent side of the page.  I check agendas each and every morning.

FIELDTRIP FORMS
If you attended Meet the Teacher night you probably signed a white field trip form.  If not, it should have been sent home Friday.  Please sign and return this form ASAP, so when we go on our first trip it won't be a scramble.  Thanks!

SIGHT WORDS
The 8 sight words we've learned so far are now on our word wall and we work hard to spell these properly in our writing at all times.  Please reinforce this at home as well.  Students should be able to read all sight words without sounding them out.  Please review these words at home regularly.  If you'd like some fun ideas to work on sight words at home, please let me know!

HOT LUNCH
Everyone should have received a Hot Lunch form in their agenda today.  These are due Friday, and our hot lunch ladies are very strict about the return date.  They have a ton of things to organize prior to ordering lunch so please be sure these are back on time.  Hot lunch is of course optional!
