Year End Updates

Pioneer Day couldn’t have been better!  We made bread, butter, wrote with quill pens, made candles and learned pioneer games.  Great job with the costumes parents!

June 17 is Sports Day from approximately 10:15am-2:00pm. If you happen to have a shirt in the color of your child’s team, that would be super helpful to help us stay organized.  If you don’t have a t-shirt that color no worries, I’ll stamp your child’s hand with their team color that morning.

Sports Day Colour Teams

Red Shirts: Atya, Skye, Zachary, Meghan, Amina, Mikey
Blue Shirts: Macgregor, River, Gavin, Avery, Roshni
White Shirts: Aki, Jack, Ben, Brienna, Liam
Yellow Shirts: Sam, Reese, Logan, Brooklyn, Gracie

I have a parent volunteer that is going to be running our station for the day (Thanks Scales family!) but I would love to have one or two more parents that would be willing to travel with our class, helping with supervision etc.  Younger siblings would be welcome.  If this is something you’d be willing to help out with please let me know!

We are beginning a camping unit and June 20 is CAMP DAY for Grade One. Please send your child to school on that day with

1. a sleeping bag or blanket.
2. a flashlight.

Be sure your child has their backpack on camp day also, as that’s how we will be carrying our stuff with us from station to station.  Thanks!

June 24 is our Year End Picnic at the Elks compound.  Thanks so much for returning your pink forms with the RSVP.  It’s going to be a GREAT DAY! Please email me if you have any questions that weren’t answered in the newsletter.

June 25 is our classroom year end party afternoon.  If you are signed up for snack you should have received an email from me earlier today.

June 26 Students last day dismissal at 11:45am / Year end Assembly 10:00am.  This assembly says farewell to our Grade 5 students, a few awards are given out, followed by a slide show.
Report cards come home on this day

June 27 Professional Development Day for teachers

Over the next two weeks you may find some random things coming home with your child here and there.  I like to send scribblers, workbooks, extra supplies etc. home a bit at a time so we don’t have overloaded backpacks on the last day of school.  Thanks!

Sight Word Update

We are beginning a new, differentiated sight word review in preparation for Grade Two.  In the next few days, your child will be bringing home a piece of paper with approximately 20 sight words on it.  Each set of words in the program is nicknamed “baseball words” or “soccer words” etc.

Students also have opportunities to practice their words at school, but I am leaving it up to them to let me know when they feel like they have their words MASTERED.  This means very little hesitation and no sounding out.  Once students master a set of words and reads them to me successfully, they get to choose a prize from my treasure box and will be given a new set to master.  I have tested each student prior to deciding on a set for them, so they should be starting at a level that suits them.
It is a goal that all students will have the Dolch Grade One words mastered by year end and also have a really good start on Grade Two words as well.

There will no longer be sight words written in the agenda.

Spelling

Thanks for the work on the spelling program!  Just a reminder that there is no RULE as to how many times a student needs to work on their spelling in a week.  What is important is that they come to school Friday, confident in using the “rule” for that week.  For some students this may mean one practice, for others this may mean more.

Curriculum Happenings

Wow are we busy!  In Math we are spending this week reviewing Adding and Subtracting strategies that we learned earlier in the year.  We are gearing up to begin our Addition and Subtraction to 18 unit very soon!  In Science we are beginning our unit on Plants and Animals and are very excited to be working on our very first fiction stories in Language Arts.

Spring Has Arrived??

Hi There,

Just a few reminders prior to the Spring Break.

HOT LUNCH ORDERS ARE DUE TOMORROW

Good Luck to Miss Lowe, who will be finishing her practicum with us this Wednesday.  We will miss her!

On Thursday, April 17th we will have “Dress Like Easter Day!” We’ve got some pretty creative little minds in here so I’m sure they can think of something to wear! There will be a spirit assembly at 8:30 that morning, and then the Easter Sock Hopwill begin around 12:30. The Easter Sock Hop is for Grades 1 and 2s to join together in the gym to show off the different circle and line dances we will have learned. Families are invited to come and watch our Sock Hop if they wish and it will go until afternoon recess at 1:55pm.

After the spirit assembly, the sock hop, and all the recesses, we will enjoy some delicious treats in our classroom to celebrate our Easter Break.

Aki: Cheese and Crackers

Zachary: Fruit

Reese: Veggies

Jack: Cookies, Muffins or Cupcakes

Sam: Juice and Napkins

There will be no spelling homework this week.  With all the Easter activities and being short week we’ve had to consolidate!!

March 20, 1014

In Language Arts, we will be wrapping up our Fairy Tales unit and students are almost ready to bring home their folders.   They are STUFFED with some amazing work that they are really proud of.  Weve looked at over 10 different fairy tales, and read many many versions.  We even had a visit from Mrs. T, our schools FNMI teacher who taught us a first nations legend called Napi and the Mouse.  A nice way to end our Fairy Tale Unit is the Fairy Tale Spring Dance that parent council is putting on at the beginning of April!

In Math, we’ve finished up our Geometry unit and have moved onto Measurement.  For this unit, students are using non-standard units of measure, and are comparing things.  Were using vocabulary like, bigger than, longer than, shorter than, about the same, etc.   This is a quick unit, and we will move onto Numbers 1-100 as well as Adding and Subtracting to 20 for the remainder of the year.

In Science, we’re getting ready to wrap up our Building Things Unit.  As the season changes, well be learning about spring. Perhaps if we talk about spring in our class, Mother Nature will listen and bring spring to us outside

In Social Studies we’ve had a wonderful time listening to the students present their Shamrocks- Wow!! Are they ever beautiful! Thank you for helping our Grade 1s with this special project! We will start our focus now on “Taking Care of Our World”, which will help prepare us for Earth Day.

I know that Easter break will be upon us before we know it, so here is what you need to know for that crazy day before the break! On Thursday, April 17th we will have “Dress Like Easter Day!”  Weve got some pretty creative little minds in here so I’m sure they can think of something to wear! Polka Dots, Stripes, Bright Spring Colours are all things that they can wear!  We will have a spirit assembly at 8:30 that morning, and then the Easter Sock Hop will begin around 12:30.  The Easter Sock Hop is when all the Grades 1 and 2s join together in the gym to show off the different circle and line dances we will have learned.  Families are invited to come and watch our Sock Hop!  It will go until afternoon recess at 1:55.

After the spirit assembly, the sock hop, and all the recesses, we will enjoy some delicious treats in our classroom to celebrate our Easter Break.  I will email those parents who have signed up to bring treats on that day.

Thank you to all the families who made it out for our Celebrations of Learning.  The best part of my job is hearing just how proud the students are of their own work, and watching them share their love for learning with others!  Its really neat to see them take on that kind of ownership.  Thank you as well for your continued support with our Home Reading Program.  Home Reading is the BEST way to help improve your childs reading.   Keep it up!!

Dont forget to keep sending Report Card Envelops and the permission forms for the dental health program!

I will be away at a funeral in Calgary on Monday.  Mrs. Speelman and Miss Lowe will be here to run the show.  I’ll be back Tuesday!

Thanks and have a wonderful weekend!

In Preparation for Celebration of Learning

This quick email is to remind you of our school wide "Celebration of Learning", which will take place this Thursday March 13th from 530-7:30, and you can sign up for a time slot online via Conference Manager.  I see some families have already done so!  If you've never used Conference Manager, you can visit the school website for the link and instructions.  You can also call the office if you need help.

A reminder that Thursday night is not a parent / teacher interview.  The students will have chosen what they want to show you, and the evening is just as it's titled, a celebration. It's a time for them to proudly show off the things we've done at school, and they are EXCITED to have you! While attendance is optional, I strongly urge you to come and celebrate with us, as these students have so much to be proud of.  If you are unable to come that evening, please email me with an alternative date and time outside of school hours and I'm sure we can make something work!

If you sign up for a time slot and then find yourself running 10 minutes late- please still come!  If you forget to sign up for a time slot and only realize this on Thursday night- please still come! The time slots are to just organize us a bit so that we don't have 22 families showing up at once.

The following day, your student will be bringing home their report card!   We're all readers, writers, and it's so neat to see the students function as a group.  We all also have things to improve on and so it becomes a report of "here's everything we're doing really well, and here's everything we need to improve on and continue to do with the last 3 months".

When you get a chance to look through your child's report card, it is yours to keep. You do not need to return it to school, or bring it for our "Celebration of Learning". In an effort to go green, you can return your envelope if you wish and I will reuse it again in June.

Of course, if after coming to the Celebration of Learning, and seeing your child’s report card and comments, you feel the need for a traditional 20 minute interview, this is always an option. Please contact me so we can plan for a time to meet on Friday March 21st, or at another date and time that works for you.

I hope this helps!  Let me know if you have any other questions!

Thanks!

In Like a Lion?!

Hi There!  Just a few things to update you on for the next few days:

Tomorrow is our annual PINK SHIRT day to support anti-bullying.  J

I could still use at least one more driver for our fieldtrip to Home Hardware this upcoming Tuesday afternoon.  We will be leaving at approx.. 12:45pm and returning at 2:15pm.  If you can help out please let me know ASAP.  Thanks!

I am away Friday and Monday.  Mrs. Sherese Speelman will be in for me.  She knows the students well and they have a great time with her.

Beginning Monday, we will be welcoming Miss Karly Lowe to our classroom for six weeks.  She is a PS11 student from the University of Lethbridge.  She will be both teaching under my direct supervision as well as observing and assisting in the classroom.  We are so excited to have her!

March is the time for another reporting period, as well as what we call the Celebration of Learning.  Unlike last year, the Celebration of Learning will be throughout the entire school. On Thursday, March 13th from 5:30-7:30, (you’ll be asked to sign up for a time slot ahead of time online) you’re invited to come and see your child’s Grade 1 work. This is not a parent/ teacher interview, but more of an ‘open house’ in which your Grade 1 student will have work to share. That’s why it’s called a Celebration of Learning! March Report cards will be sent home on Friday, March 14th.
If after the Celebration of Learning and reading the report card, you would still prefer a more traditional parent teacher interview, please let me know and we can arrange for that on Friday March 21st. Information on how to sign up for a time slot for Celebration of Learning using an online system called Conference Manager will be sent home closer to the date.

Don’t forget to check out the important March dates!
